Ashok Leyland is a Chennai based commercial vehicle manufacturing company and is the second largest commercial vehicle manufacturing company with a market share of about 28%. It was founded in 1948 and is one of India's leading truck manufacturers. It has six plants in India and manufactures spare parts and engines for industries and military use. The company sells about 60K odd vehicles and 7K odd engines annually. It makes both Medium Commercial Vehicle and Heavy Commercial Vehicle (M&HCV). It concentrates primarily on the 16-25 tonne range of trucks. It even has a joint venture (JV) with Nissan Motors of Japan. It even has its presence in the 7.5 tonne to the 49 tonne range of trucks. The company was the first to introduce multi-axle trucks, full air brakes, etc. It developed a Hybrid Electric Vehicle in 2002. It has many joint ventures with companies like Continental Corporation, Alteams in Finland and John Deere. As a part of its global strategy, AL acquired Czech Republic-based Avia's truck business and has been named Avia Ashok Leyland Motors s. r. o. It acquired a 26% stake in the British bus manufacturer Optare, a former British Leyland subsidiary CH Roe. The manufacturing locations in India are: Ennore and Hosur in Tamil Nadu, Alwar in Rajasthan, Bhandara in Maharashtra, Pantnagar in Uttarakhand.
