06/NOV/2014 The Kollam cargo port is all set to start operations from an Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) environment. The formalities have been completed and the code is expected to be allocated by this weekend. The facility will result in the Customs Department opening a full-fledged office at the port.
The EDI facility was one of the main demands of the cashew processors here for enabling direct import of raw cashew and export of kernels. Annually, about 6 lakh tonnes of raw cashew reach Kollam and about 70,000 tonnes of kernels are exported from here. With the EDI facility, both import and export can be done without hassles from the Kollam port.
The EDI is simply a set of data definitions that permit business forms to be exchanged electronically and represents the most advanced mode of electronic commerce today.
