A non government organization (NGO) based in Thane has alleged corrupt practices at the Acchad Regional Transport Office (RTO) check post in Thane on the Gujarat border. Officials at the border check posts have been accused of underreporting the number of heavy carriage vehicles, thus causing multi-crore losses to the state exchequer.Activists from the Consumer Protection Service Council also conducted a sting operation at the Hadakhed check post on the MP border where they alleged that officials collected money from truck drivers and allowed them to pass even if the vehicles were overloaded.Ganesh Joshi, national president of the NGO claimed that police officials were rampantly issuing coupons and extorting money from truck drivers at the check post.
The trucks pass through the hi-tech check posts in MP before they reach Maharashtra border where they are made to pay money at tea stalls. The money is charged without even weighing the vehicles. Those who protest get assaulted, alleged Joshi. The charges are as per the whims of the officials and the Motor Vehicles Act rules are not followed, claimed NGOs national secretary and citizen activist Dayanand Nene. The team during their sting operation also got some audio visual bytes from a few truck drivers who were reportedly issued these coupons. The corruption here is so bad that one can easily carry explosives if you bribe officials, a driver reportedly told the team during their sting operation. The activists also alleged that having officers posted in the same area for over three years should be probed into
They have also requested the chief minister and transport minister to set up an enquiry in the functioning of the state RTO. The 132 RTO inspectors in the state should be immediately reshuffled and CCTV surveillance at these posts must be connected to the state servers, demanded Nene at a press meet.RTO of Thane, M B Jadhav, however, did not comment on the allegations.Bhilad earned Rs 69.28 crore in 2011-12 while Acchad located on the same highway earned only Rs 45.74 crore in the same period.
