More than 48 hours after a major fire broke out at the CEAT factory premises at Nahur, the fire brigade was still struggling to bring it under control at the source till Tuesday evening. Fire officials said the highly inflammable rubber present at the raw materials store (RMS), where the blaze started, makes it difficult to control the fire. Fire engines were present at the spot till Tuesday evening for cooling operations. We have mainly got the fire under control, but there is still some fire at the source.
It is taking long because the material that has caught fire is high-grade rubber, which takes a lot of time to cool down. Once we get the fire under control, we will start the investigation, said P G Dhubal, Assistant Divisional Fire Officer.Fire officials have confirmed that the companys fire safety system was functional. Although we have our own equipment, we are also using the companys fire safety system to douse the fire, added Dhubal .The tyre firms managing director Anant Goenka said the company has been following all the required fire safety norms. Our company conducts safety audits once a month. We are trying to find out the cause of the fire and will take corrective action so that such an incident doesnt re-occur.
We stringently adhere to all safety measures and standards prescribed at all our manufacturing facilities,he said. According to fire officials, the fire gutted the 1,500sqm RMS, a structure consisting ground floor, first floor and scrap area, and stores rubber and carbon black. There were 549 people present inside the factory on Sunday evening when the grade-2 fire broke out injuring one employee. The injured, Ganesh Khupte (30), was discharged from the hospital on Monday morning, following treatment of 10 per cent burns.
